‘Dance Moms’ star Kelly Hyland reveals breast cancer diagnosis
Kelly Hyland, reality television personality known for her role on Lifetime’s “Dance Moms,” shared on Instagram Wednesday that she has been diagnosed with breast cancer.
Hyland revealed her diagnosis to E! News, noting that she became concerned when she received compliments about her weight loss without any changes to her routine.
“I scheduled a mammogram,” the 53-year-old informed E! News. “I had one done just eight months ago, and the results were clear. However, this recent mammogram and sonogram revealed a mass.”
Doctors diagnosed her with stage 1 invasive carcinoma, grade 3, describing her breast cancer as “very fast-moving,” according to the outlet.
Hyland broke the news to her children, Brooke, Paige, and Josh, during a group call, as reported by E! News.
Paige shared with E! News that her mother’s diagnosis brought back memories of her grandmother’s battle with cancer, who passed away in 2019.
“So I understood the challenging journey ahead, and it pained me to think of my mother enduring the same experience,” Paige expressed.
Josh admitted feeling “speechless and scared” upon hearing his mom’s diagnosis but expressed hopefulness about her recovery.
“I believe she detected it early,” Josh told E! News. “I know my mom is resilient enough to overcome this.”
Hyland recently appeared in “Dance Moms: The Reunion,” where she and other cast members discussed life after the show’s initial airing. The show premiered on May 1 on Lifetime.
Following Hyland’s announcement on Instagram, her castmates and family members flooded the comments section with messages of support. Christi Lukasiak, also from “Dance Moms,” expressed her love and support, stating, “I love you and the kids. Forever have your back.”
Brooke, Hyland’s daughter, also left a comment, writing, “My strong mama,” accompanied by a heart emoji.
